Community Garden Project

ST JOHN THE BAPTIST CHURCH AND BROOKFIELD SCHOOL COMMUNITY GARDEN PROJECT

The garden community area at the front of the church is the result of an innovative initiative by St John’s Church and 2006 final year students of Brookfield School who did the early design drawings and cleared much of the bushes and shrubs obscuring the view of the church.

As a church, we were concerned that the values and mission of St Johns were not being communicated clearly enough through the gardens and exterior presence of the church, and felt that we should make a public statement through our grounds of hospitality, openness, the value of natural beauty, and a shared community between peoples.

Our aim was to see inviting and easy access to the gardens, safe, simple and beautiful gathering places, easy maintenance, artistic creativity, and clearer visibility of the church from the road.

The partnership with Brookfield School has been a fascinating, creative adventure of mutual interest and shared learning, combined with a willingness to provide an attractive and welcoming community facility which complements our beautiful church and Centre.

Funding and support for the project was shared between the Parochial Church Council, the Community Amenity Environmental Project, members of the congregation, and local business organisations.
